A Dog's Prayer

Hear my silent voice, ancient as the wind and land
Yet I, a simple beast, reveal the deepest heart of Man.
Most noble of all creatures great and small, incapable of speech or guile,
I alone the only friend to Man, ever faithful, never failing all the while.

My only role, unchanging through all time
to serve Him who created me and mine:
A lower god 'twixt Heaven and earth,
of all God's blessings I became
 Man's friend, protector, and earthly
angel first.

Though innocent of sins or shame,
yet I would bear the pain for those of Man
in cruelty toward me and countless  others at his fickle hand.
My noble mind and voice, though silent, speak with soft intent:
reviled by few, loved by some, known to all in God's firmament.

Before my flight from earthly realm,
Thy will be done in earth and Heaven,
and neither life nor death itself defeat my firm
 devotion given.
Yet, hear a humble servant's plea:
to be with Man my only prayer, to serve my only destiny.
For if the earth and all within shall pass away and justice reign at last,
then I and Man shall dwell as one, united as in ages past.

I am Dog,  the crowning jewel o'er
every worldly treasure,
my dignity a lyric deep beyond Man's clever count and measure.
Yet I alone have stayed the course of nature's path
'til Man arise from selfish dream to know me as I
am, at last...

Here are some ideas to help you along as you learn more about dogs. Each is selected from my experiences and I hope you will remember and share some of your favorites.

Your lost dog: Consider having a number tattoo  (like D1951) on the dog's inner thigh or inside the ear flap that you will remember. Dog tattoo clinics usually do it for about $15-20. A dog with a tattoo is owned by SOMEONE and even if it has no collar, the finder has sure proof when you inquire that it is your dog. It might be the difference between a dog with no collar that is turned over to a shelter and getting your dog back...

The background image is 3 Boxer puppies and I selected it for a special reason. I will tell it in a short story, which is true...

A family had 3 Boxers... 2 females and 1 male. Somewhere  in the past few years, something happened to the family and they turned over all 3 Boxers to an animal shelter. The females were adopted quickly, but the male Boxer was left behind, alone in the shelter.
A special person who works to find a home for adoptable dogs about to be euthanized learned about the male dog. She took the dog on the day before he was to be killed and then located a rescue group that was willing to 'safehouse' him until a true adopter could be found.
Another person who was familiar with the rescue group browsed the website of the group and saw the special description of the Boxer who was 4 years old, had heartworms, and needed to be treated and kept quiet as the treatment took effect . The Boxer had been attacked by a PitBull that was well cared for and loved by his owner, the 'safehouse' person. So the Boxer had 'been through a lot of changes' in a short while, yet remained docile and affectionate.
As the heartworm treatment was nearing completion, the person who had become the new 'safehouse' was convinced the the Boxer was nearly a perfect match for a female PitBull already in the family 'pack' of 2 dogs. It was a match made in heaven and the rescue group had a discount on the medical treatments.
So the last 'safehouse' person adopted the Boxer and he has lived happily ever after with his female PitBull, who was also an orphan. Oddly, she was a Katrina hurricane dog among thousands that were rehomed in the USA east coast... and she found her way to the very rescue group that was maintaining the Boxer.

Now...   Look at the picture in the background and see the 3 Boxer puppies. All were healthy, all were beautiful, all were together in a family for several years. Yet one day their world turned upside down and only by good fortune and the dedication of rescue groups did all 3 dogs eventually find a true home.
Surely you must have figured that the story is my story, and you are right. The Boxer is healthy, happy, loved, trained to basics, and living an ideal life with 2 friendly dogs and a person who loves each dog as an individual, knowing that each dog shares the 'dog nature' that is in all dogs. And now you are a bit closer to that understanding for having read this.

Every dog needs a 'pack' for protection, food, care, and basic training. Humans literally created dogs thousands of years ago and they live at our mercy. They are our greatest treasure in Nature, given to us by God who endowed humans alone with the earthly intelligence to create a companion creature.

Respect dogs for what they are as special animals and revere them for their unique role in all of the animal kingdom.

Now look at the poem below for how dogs might pray if it were possible...
